Weekly Comic Review for 5/22/13

And another week….

Green Lantern #20 – Wrath of the First Lantern, the Epic Finale – “Special Oversized Anniversary Issue” Anniversary issue? When did issue 20 become an anniversary issue? It is oversized and a squarebound book. It even cost $7.99 that, given the 11 pages of Green Lantern ads and 10 pages of “Congratulations Geoff Johns” pages, seems to be really damn overpriced. The book actually starts in the future so that they can artificially inflate the story. You get a few pages of introducing new characters just to look into the Green Lantern book to see what happened. We pick up where we left off with Hal Jordan killing himself. He becomes a Black Lantern and then, along with all the other lanterns of all the colors attack the First Lantern. In the end, it takes Sinestro as Parallax and then Hal summoning Necron to take Volthoom down. Hal becomes a Green Lantern, Sinestro kills the “evil” Guardians (other than Ganthet), and then we get more fluff pages showing “the future” for all the major corps people. I mean, we know none of the people’s futures will change, right? The story was generally interesting but the book seemed padded to have extra costs.

Green Lantern Corps #20 – Wrath of the First Lantern Epilogue – OK. Two week later, we finally get the end of the story and I could read the epilogue. Guy and Kilowog free Salaak who points him back to Earth where Xar is attacking his family. He tries to take a break with his family there but he just can’t stick it out.

Green Lantern: New Guardians #20 – Wrath of the First Lantern Epilogue – After the battle, Kyle checks in on each of the members of the teams and then takes a break to be human again, doing art and visiting his father. After everything from the storyline, it’s a nice change.

Red Lanterns #20 – Wrath of the First Lantern Epilogue – We thought Sinestro killed the Guardians, but it looks like he left one for Atrocitus. He finally gets his revenge getting to kill a Guardian. Back on Earth, Rancorr tries to make a place again but his rage makes him a bad fit and he decides his place is with the Red Lantern Corps. I hope they continue to flesh out his character. (Oh, yeah! And more Dex-Starr!!!)

Scarlet Spider #17 – The League of Assassins finally call in their marker with Kaine. Who does he have to kill? Who else but Wolverine. He’d be hard enough to kill even without being in the middle of the other X-Men so Kaine has it rough. At least he’s got Aracely (who is now calling herself Hummingbird when in costume — Really!?) in his corner this time around. Is it sad that I’m actually rooting for the Scarlet Spider? Best conversation of the book…

Aracely: … “I want to see a show when we get there. We can see a show, right?”
Kaine: “They’re sending me to kill someone, Arecely.”
Aracely: “The whole time?!”

I know it’s silly but it really made me laugh.

Teen Titans #20 – Cover headline: “Red Robin Reborn!” Guess who barely appears in the book? Yup, the Titans including Red Robin. The book is a background on Trigon and Raven. It’s a cool story and very similar to her pre-New 52 life but has nothing to really do with Robin. Really, DC? At least make the cover relevant and not totally misleading.

Young Aveners #5 – We’ve spent 4 issues fighting the mom parasite and they finally find a solution: Run away. Yeah. That’s it. The only way to defeat her is to be nowhere near their parents so they go off into space or something. *yawn* I’m a big fan of the Young Avengers but Wiccan, Hulkling, and Hawkeye are the only original members left. Iron Lad is elsewhere in time, Vision was destroyed, Stature was killed, and Patriot and Speed just left. That leaves less than half the old members and Noh-Varr, Loki, and Miss America don’t fit as well. So, I guess I should say that I like the Young Avengers but I don’t like the team in their title.

Now onto the Top 3. Things are a little better and there were 3 titles I enjoyed. I’m going to include Green Lantern Corps since I had to hold off and then add in Green Lantern: New Guardians and Scarlet Spider. It’s bedtime so I’m not getting to the next week yet tho I do have them read. I’ll be caught up soon.
