Weekly Comic Review for 7/20/11

Well, I picked up another week of books yesterday and I’m finally getting around to posting the week of 7/20 and reading last week’s stuff. I should be caught up soon, I hope. So, here’s what I have for now.

Daredevil #1 – Daredevil gets his own title back. I’m not really a DD fan but I thought I’d see what they did with the first issue. Here’s my review in brief – 2 stories, really bad art, “I’m not Daredevil… now let me go get into costume.” *yawn* Oh, yeah, and there’s also The Spot. They can avoid issue 2 and up as far as I’m concerned.

DC Comics: The New 52 #1 – A free “comic” that’s just the descriptions of the new 52 first issues that we’ve seen elsewhere.

Flashpoint: Deadman and the Flying Graysons #2 (of 3) – The Amazons attach and end up killing Dick’s mom. His father end up getting fatally wounded while trying to escape with Nabu’s Helmet. They are saved by Count Vertigo and dragged into the rebellion.

Flashpoint: Legion of Doom #2 (of 3) – Heatwave works out an escape wth the help of an evil and psychotic Plastic Man. (Just don’t call him that name to his face!) On his way out, Heatwave takes out Animal Man and the Atom while Plas takes down an Amazo unit. Fun battles and weird changes to the realities we know.

Flashpoint: Wonder Woman and the Furies #2 (of 3) – This a flashback to the days following death of Wonder Woman’s mother. All the planning in the background trying to break things apart is really disturbing. Plus, we get to see what happened to Mera.

Herc #5 – Another “Fear Itself” tie-in. Herc battles his way through creatures trying to stop the bad guys at the source of all the trouble around him. On the way, Mercury shows up to let Hercules know that Zeus wants him to stand down. Does he listen? Of course not. So, how do you take down a couple gods when you’ve lost your own powers? From the looks of things, you get stoned. No, not that way. Herc is a statue now it seems. Can’t wait to see what this plan was.

Justice League of America #59 – Donna’s dead and it seems that the rest of the world has fallen to Eclipso. But looks can be deceiving. It seems that the JLA is playing mind games with Eclipso while the Atom and Starman work to free the Shade from the inside. Once Shade is free, things thongs go downhill for Eclipso and then Bruce Gordon takes over again. So, JLA, you’ve just defeated a minion of the Christian God. What do you do next? Well, the might as well go to Disneyland since the JLA is no more.

Legion of Super-Heroes #15 – The Legion comes torgether to take on an expanded Legion of Super-Villains as things start working towards the colmination of Saturn Queen’s plan.

Titans #37 – “The Methuselah Imperative” part 2 of 3. Jerricho is dying but it seems Deathstroke’s machine can save him. When this proves true, can it be used to bring back the lost family of the other Titans members, like Lian? Slade thinks so, but some of the members aren’t so keen on finding out. A battle starts and we find out next issue which side wins.

War of the Green Lanterns Aftermath #1 (of 2) – Suppose you threw a war and everyone came? It seems the post war party is a little short on party favors, including a planet named Mogo and a ring for Hal Jordan. There are a lot of people who aren’t too happy about these things. Salaak refuses to accept any of the resignations due to the heated arguments, showing that the corps members (including himself) are suffering from post-traumatic stress. Some of the lanterns decide to take out this stress on John Stewart. Kyle stops them even though he sort of agrees with them. To say the corps members have a lot on their minds is putting it lightly. It really makes you wonder what the second issue will bring.

– It may not be Salem, but Zatanna has a group of witch hunters after her. And while she doesn’t realize it, they are well prepared for her. Zatanna shows she’s not all flash and magic. She has a brain and enough skill to hold her own even when limited. (The first thing the hunters do is take out her voice.)

There’s a few real lamers in the group this time but there’s some great ones too. I had a few good choices for the top 3 but this is what it got narrowed down to: Flashpoint: Legion of Doom, War of the Green Lanterns Aftermath, and Zatanna. It’s time for bed now, but I’ll get working on the rest of the books I need to catch up on. That’s after Friday Night Magic tomorrow night, that is. 🙂 Sometimes it’s a challenge to keep up with all my geeky stuff. (You don’t want to know how many games I’ve been trying to catch up on. I even have my free time in DC Universe Online to use. I’ll have to get some screen captures of my characters.) Have a good night all!
