Prepare for Mortal Kombat

Mortal Kombat first hit the big screen in 1995. I remember going with a friend (also a big Mortal Kombat fan) to see it in a movie theatre. It was great. Just the right mix of action and comedy (mostly Johnny Cage) along with getting to see the video game characters in live action made it enjoyable. Move on to Mortal Kombat: Annihilation and… well, let’s just move on from there as it was definitely less great.

Now we’re in 2021 and a teaser of a new movie is out. While I’m not a fan of “reboots”, I’m interested in seeing where this one goes. Each Mortal Kombat game stands on it’s own while overall building on previous ones and they even rebooted the game recently too. The teaser really doesn’t tell too much even though it says that Earth Realm has been invaded. We get a list of various classic characters like Liu Kang, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, and Kitana as well as flashes of ones like Kenshi, Goro, and Kano. If all of them are going to be in there, it’s going to be a cool movie. Like some others coming out during the pandemic, it will be releasing both in movie theatres and HBOMAX on April 16. I’m looking forward to more details on it.
